Too funny.

I have 8 pairs of rams in a 33 gallon right now.  Some will be going in 15 gallons and some in 10's.  The 33 is a holding tank until I get them all setup.

Come home at lunch today and what do I see.... one of the 6 terracotta pots is laced in ram eggs.  The parents are making life a living hell for everyone else.

Guess I need to finish up those 10s and 15s huh?

thats awesome!!! congrats bud..

:D congrats Bigdaddy.....Where did you buy your rams and do you have any pictures of them? Can I ask what your water conditions are?

I kept about 35 of my ram fry. They are 2 1/2 weeks old and almost a 1/4 inch long now. I think the rams are the most interesting fish I have ever owned.  :)

BigDaddy

I got them from the recent order from Tim in Montreal.

They ate the eggs... which I was expecting.  This are juvenille rams, and probably just barely sexually mature.  The new tank plus the live food must have triggered their spawning instinct.

Once they are each in their own tanks, I'll get ready for serious spawning attempts.

If those were the ones that I housed for a day thry were tiny fish! I can't believe they spawned!

BigDaddy

Well, they did it yet again.  Got to watch them in action too!  I have had multiple ram spawnings in the past, but never been able to see it actually happen.

This time, they have successfully moved past egg eating stage.  I have about 50 wrigglers in the tank (yes, they are all still in the 33 gallon).  They just hatched last night.

I'm actually quite surprised.  These are the first "decent" set of rams parents I've had.  My previous experiences with rams have definately been the epitome of their "web reputatation" of being awful parents.  It will be interesting to see if I can get to the free swimming stage in this tank.

Julie

Congrads BD.  Do the fry feed from the parents mucous?

Julie

BigDaddy

Nope.  In fact, the fry are so small that baby brine shrimp is sometimes too big for their mouths.

I use Java moss as a first food.  It is always loaded with enough infusoria for the first few days after they start free swimming.  The BBS is usually a few days later...
