OK, I have been using the regular salt. I will pick some epsom salt tomrrow at Shoppers.

Turns out my wife had some under the sink (small amount) I will use this now and buy a bag tomorrow.

I feel stupid, I was using the regular salt... I wish my brain worked sometimes.

Ok cool. Walmart has it for less than $2 for a 2L sized carton. You'll find it in the pharmacy/shampoo/razorblades section.

It's MAGNESIUM SULFATE. Nothing else, just MgSO4

Don't worry, most people don't realise that there are loads of different SALTS out there, and they all react differently in our tanks.

You might want to do a couple of good water changes to remove the aquarium salt before adding the epsoms.  I'm not sure if there's an interaction between the two...

I have changed the water and added the epsom salts. He appears to be losing some colour in his scales and not sure but I think he is getting tail and fin rot. He has been floating on one side, which was swollen pretty badly. The swelling has gone down a little bit, but now I noticed on his other side he seems to have white blotches on him.

Is trying to treat him futile at this point? He doesn't seem to be getting much better and I don't want him to suffer.

Or should I just wait it out, it has been 5 days now and I fear that there is no life left in this guy. He has fought hard, but I think he is on his last breath :(

Regretfully he has passed away.

Thanks to everyone for helping me.

I would just like to add my experiences with bloat and dropsy - and bloat type diseases when the fish stops eating.
Once they stop its too late.
The only way to effectively treat these diseases is with medicated food that actually passes through their digestive tract  (Pers comm. various CRLCA lectures and speakers from the University of Guelph).    The only way to get a non-eating fish to eat is to force feed it with a syringe or another injection devices available from your local vet. the idea is to gently push the medicated food past the fish's gullet. There are various sites on the Internet that describe this.   If I had to find one I would try searching for force feeding fish with metridonazole soaked food.  (of course I would spell metro correctly).

The best way to PREVENT this is NEVER OVERFEED YOUR FISH!!!!!!!     Feed then some Roughage or Spirulina every few days.  Fat fish are not nice fish. Especially wild!  If your fish does not have a slightly concave stomach it is too fat!  this is especially critical for mbuna type and tropheus type from Africa.
