DIY Inline filter?

Alright so here is my plan I thought of today in a effort to save the amount of weight on my floor. I thought about making inline filters like they have for RO water but out of PVC or some clear plastic. The containers would be 3" or more and then I would have a 1" or more tube on the inside of that. I would then drill holes in the bottom of the inner tube so water would have to pass through the filter media before it could go through the 1" tube to the next 3" tube.

Here is a picture I sketched up on paint to help give you an idea. The water is marked blue when it is inside the 3" container and pink when inside the 1" container. It also doesn't mean that its only gonna be 3 long I was thinking maybe 4. Two mech, one bio, and one for chem/polishing. The pump would then be placed on the outside of that last filter so it could push the water back up to the tank.



I'm hoping to create something like this but cheaper.

Does this sound possible? I was thinking maybe making two of those because I have two intake pipes and would like to get the most use out of them as I could.

Cleaning is a major issue. Hard to see due to size of diagrams. DIY to me is fun and rarely cheaper. By the time I get finished tweeking my finished product it sends the cost up. Stilll I enjoy making things. Keepa running cost of everything even stuff you once purchased but is just sitting around. You'd be surprised how fast it adds up.

I was thinking of maybe a screw off cap on the top or bottom of the 3" containers, hopefully that would allow me to stilll have a water tight seal and make it so I can remove media and clean it.

I'd like to try and make each container cost less then $25 bucks so we'll see how it goes. I will try and do this should a few more people give me the okay as to whether or not this might work.

Oh wow, thats way easier!  thanks! I'm gonna try making one though and see if I like it and how well it works.

I might be able to get more money now then I had orginally expected so hopefully I can pick up some used canisters or something. Might have to try and borrow more money from my parents to get the filters
