jaracas

walking along the St. Lawrence around one of the marina's and i saw this (sorry about the pic quality)

it was about 10" long

now, from what i could find the markings looked like Gar, but the head structure seems more Pike/Muskie.
Now i have been catching Pike and Muskie for 20 years and never came across any that looked like this, even the tiny ones caught on small fly's and worms etc were green and silver

DARKPHREAK

From the top it looks like a grass pike I used to catch behind my dad's place near Hawkesbury.

Yes I'd say so also... it could also be a chain pickerel but the grass pickerel is a better bet.
Sign of global warming... 30 years ago their northern limit was Montreal.

jaracas

well after a quick search i have discovered that none of the Pickerel species have markings on their fins, it's a taxonomic feature so rules out them as you can clearly see the fins have the same spots as the body in the pic

i did get a better view of the fins as it scooted away, but the shutter lad on the camera put paid to another pic

The picture quality is perfect, if we asume that this one moves sometimes :)

Nevermind. I should have read the post before responding. Didn't realize it was in the St. lawrence or that it was 10" long.

Here's a grass pickerel with fin markings just minutes before his visit to the taxodermist. :)

I wanted to... but Marx had first choice . I think he is using it to cycle some of his tanks.
