How do you control algae in a brackish tank ?  I'm noticing that brown algae is beginning to appear.  I know chems are out of the question, so are there snails, fish or other critters (SAE equivalents) that will do the trick?  Thanks again

Diatoms?

What is your salinity?

Im using 2tbs/g to get .005

I have ramshorn in my brackish tank. I dont think they are the best suited to it though. They breed well enough in there however. I am throwing them out with waterchanges since I dint have anything here that will eat them.

I did get one MTS that came home from BA Innes. From what I have read on the internet they are better suited to Brackish water and do a great job a cleaning.

My salinity is 1.010   I'll look into MTS.  Thanks

Do go with MTS and add an inch or two of gravel for them to hide in during the day (cosmetics).

I've read that brown algae is a common type of algae that appears new s/w tanks but will go away in time.  I still think I'll put a few MTS's in there to see how they make out.

You may have to aclimate them to your water over several hours. I can not move Ramshorn snails from my Brack tank to my FW tank. They die in a few hours if they are droped right in. I put them in a waterchange bucket with an inch of BW and add some fw ever couple of hours.

There is a process called "dripping" in which the salinity of water is either raised or lowered using a drip from an airline..one drop every two seconds or so.  Works well and over a few hours you can safely acclimatize fish, crabs etc.

Invertebrates are very sensitive to salinity changes, which is why a salt dip works on parasites.

Dont worry about dripping MTS.  Unless they are large and old, they should be fine to the adjustment.

I have a fresh water tank where I breed mts' and at night they get dropped into my b/w tank...none lost like that.

Nelson

Thanks all, I'll be dropping a few in the b/w tank tonight.
