So the eggs after sitting unfertilized have now developed fungus. The parents are still fanning religiously- should I just leave them be? Theyve really taken care of the eggs- religiously taking turns fanning and blowing and all. I feel sad for them!

Julie

I generally wipe the eggs off with papertowel.  The pair will likely spawn again soon.  As mentionned by TR, are they laying near the input or output of the filter?

Julie

aidensmomma2000

Nope, I just use an aquaclear and theyve laid them the farthest away they could (the front of the aquarium).

Julie

Eggs are on the opposite corner from the AC?   In a 30g on the same side as the ac may be too much flow; I've had that happen in the 20 and 30 with ac150's.
Try a clay flowerpot turned upside down at the opposite end of tank.

Interesting question Julie....mine have deposited their eggs at the exact place on the intake tube all three times they've spawned.

Hi aidensmomma:

At this point you should maybe just wait another day the Discus at this point usually  just eat the eggs,  thier normal behaviour is to eat the dead eggs (fungused or white looking eggs) as the incubation during the hatching phase continues.

They then continue to fan the rest of the eggs that remain alive, in your case unfortuneatly they didn't succeed.

All you can do at this point as mention in the above thread is simply try to analize why or what can I do to improve it's water conditions even more.  The bottom line in the key to breeding  Discus is always going to be water quality!!!

If the water quality isn't up to par or to what your paticular pair considers aceptable to thier comford needs,  it's simply not going to happen.   (Henceforth why the Discus reputation of them being very hard or fussy fish)

Luckliy today not all Discus are all bred the same any more,  So when buying them one should always try to find out where or how they were bred/raised.

If you purchase Discus that were bred from a specific enviroment, this could be say breeders using reverse osmoises water, water from the states, the orient breeders which naturally have soft water, or a local breeder, Treated water ,City water etc...  And now the fun part!!! were your Discus bred naturally with their own parents? or Artifically bred?

All these factors somtimes are overlooked and then becomes frustrating,  and of course blame the fish it's the Discus fault thier just fussy fish!

It's not to say none of the above can't succeed I had both Discus from naturally bred parents,  and some from artifically bred Discus.

But it was always harder to breed the artifically bred Discus vs the Discus naturally raised by thier own parents.  It is possible but a lot more difficult.

If the parents aren't eating the eggs after realizing thier eggs are fungused aidensmomma, try to distract the fish to the opposite side and quickly go in with a net and scoop/scrape the eggs out.  And they will continue on and try agian.

Lower your Aquaclear flow a little.... Then from there try the fungus treatment on the next spawn see how it works out.

                          Take care aidensmomma  :)

PS:Julie I need a GodMother to go with the GodFather

Mettle

Make them breed so I can get some off of you.

I have a big piece of slate that you could probably break up if you wanted it. Free of charge. Just have to pick it up... For the discus to lay against. Would probably give you 3 or 4 nice chunks. I could even smash it for you if you wanted. I like breaking stuff.

TR

Whoaaa am I missing something???

I thought the Discus were spawing on slate/flower pot etc... Julie mentioning a flower pot which is correct (non glazed plain terra cotta) If so definately give the Discus an object to spawn on for sure.

This will encourage the Discus to protect and clean the slate /pot etc...as well.  While Discus can spawn on say intake tubes driftwood etc...

spawning on the aquarium glass is not what one should hope for, if you rub your hand on the inside glass of your aquarium its not exactly clean!  but that I don't mean visual but in the sence it's  got a slight slimmy invisable film.

And if theres light or what ever beaming on the front of the glass then the eggs can be affected be it bacteria.

Sorry folks if this isn't the case  just thought It worth a mention.

Mettle

I also have some unused pots that you could have if you want, Robin. I've had them in previous tanks. Most have the bottoms banged out I believe. But you're welcome to what you want.  :D

TR

Your all heart Mettle! that's what I keep saying the fish hobby is supposed to be all about.

TEACHING!!! LEARNING!!! SHARING!!! PROMOTING!!! THE FISH HOBBY!!! and not always "I want!" or "Gimme Gimme!" to fill basements up with more junk for those that don't need it.

Mettle

I'm trying to widdle away on some of that junk right now, TR.  ;)  Plus, Robin's an old high school friend. So of course I'm willing to help her out!

Another batch of eggs, four days since the last deposit and in the exact same place.  Certainly a prolific couple.

What? Me? Nono same batch of eggs.

They always lay on the glass.

Julie- its a corner tank (thanks Nelson!) and the filter is at the back corner (at the v part) but it is flowing towards where they laid their eggs.

Mettle- Muchos Gracias on the slate/plants offer but I do have plenty! I just havent added them to the tank which I will do now.

TR- as always, many thanks for the great advice!

Actually it's there second year, they're birthday is Oct 28th so I guess they just got under the radar when it comes to attending school.  They loved their first year and now they think they're big shots now that they're in senior kindergarten   Mornings last year and afternoons this year.  Glad to hear Aiden enjoys school, makes things easier for Mom

aidensmomma2000

Ahhhh. Aiden didnt go to Jk because his daycare offered an all day program based on the public school board's curriculum. Now that hes too old for group care (daycare at a daycare centre) he does 1/2 day of senior kindergarden and a half day of home care (go goes to a womans house).
