Hi all,

I have been reading a lot on these plant growing tanks (I have started a low maintenance one) and was wondering what types of ferts people use. I was hoping to upgrade and add some more plants instead of my java fern and other grass like plant (knowing the scientific words will never happen for me  ::))

I currently have Flourish Excel but it seems that whenever I add it to the tank some of the plants start to go brown. Anything else i should be using or not?

What you need is Macro N=Nitrogen, P=Phosphorus, K=Potassium and trace elements. You can either get them from the fish store's (brand name product like Seachem) or from hydroponic store. If your tank is small, will be easier just use products from the fish store.

One of the possible caused that your plants turn brown is, Excel is an organic carbon, if you overdose it, you created an environment very similar to their emersed form. Some plants in crypt family, their emersed form look more brown and nicer than in submersed form. Did all your fishes hided away when you dosed excel? If they did, most likely you put in too much! Just take it easy and your fishes will love you more!  ;)
