Hi guys,

I started a thread in the freshwater tank build forum if you want more background, but I'm looking for a good carpet plant and/or a good grass looking plant.  I will be using eco complete soil and flourish excel for CO2, and the tank has a PAR of ~38 at the substrate... I don't really know what that equates to in terms of lighting (it is LED lighting) but apparently that level is decent enough to grow HC (albeit with pressurized co2).

I was thinking maybe UG, but not sure if it can be found anywhere in Ottawa (it couldn't when I was last buying plants last year).

Cheers,

JB

Dwarf hair grass should be good

I have been able to grow HC (Hemianthus callitrichoides) in a moderate light / no CO2 tank for a few months.

The reason I failed in the longer term is that I didn't trim it; after a while the carpet got thicker, the under layer didn't get enough light and started to rot, and ultimately the whole carpet broke down into bits, detached itself, floated up to the surface and lost a battle against algae (after all, I did neglect that tank for some time and let the algae take the upper hand).

I like the HC... Any idea of where i can find this stuff?

I got mine from La Niche, it was in good shape, growing on a coconut shell in one of their display tank.

You have to check with them from time to time.  In general I find it hard to get any cover / foreground plant from the local stores  :-X  I had placed a few orders through different stores in the last year and none of them ever came through, maybe it was just bad luck at the time.

I've seen hc at the emerald plaza petsmart from time to time, but you'd wasting your time if you can't provide the right conditions for it - it's very sensitive.
