diy canopy

Has anyone here ever cut glass before? I want to cut a old peice I took from a storm window so it will fit into my wood canopy as a splash gard. I have one of those little glass cutter wheel things but I have never used one before.

Any hints or tips?

Measure twice, cut once.

Wear rawhide gloves and protective glasses.

If it doesn't snap easily, don't try harder.

I should have took tip number three more to heart. This whole cutting glass thing is for the birds, or the more quallified  :/

Did it explode?  

I read a bit about glass drilling, and apparantly you're not supposed to even attempt it on "tempered" glass...

this was an old storm window pane. I pulled it out of an old wooden frame storm laying around in the barn. It did not explode but it did shatter behind the score line

I tried to cut it, got a so-so line and then put it on the belt sander. It gloes when you sand it  Then fit it on the lid and tried to drill it. It cracked accross the middle. So I got the second pane and tried to cut it, that one just broke in half. By then the wife came down to see what all the cursing was about. When she saw all the glass she added to my existing line of cusses. I never knew her dad was a sailor :p

a little tip is to keep the glass cutter in turpentine, if the wheel gets damp it rusts real easy and doesn't cut very well, plus if you don't lubricate the wheel before cutting it gets blunt.

normally if the glass doesn't break easily along the score it is time to buy a new cutter as the one you are using is blunt

Alright! Round two produced a piece of glass that will do. Its got an uneven side to it but I can hide that. I just siliconed it in place.

It was a hard thing to do. It must take alot of broken bits before you get the hang of it. I should have just taken my old windopw pane down to jaracas. He probly wasnt doing anything on a Sunday night anyways . . . LOL thanks for the tips guys. It did help me get better at it, although I still suck at cutting glass
