Still mad about "time of use" hydro??

I still think the pricing is VERY fair for what we are getting.  Its high in retrospect to what we WERE paying, but seeing the other side of the story you will learn to appreciate what we have.

Take for instance, did you know that the Electric company's pay solar farms (Or house installations) $0.60 - $0.80+ /kWh.  Where does the extra come from to cover the value over what we as consumers pay?  Taxes :)  Wind Farm installations get paid anywhere from $0.25-$0.40/kWh.  Again, where does the difference come from?  Taxes again!  The government is subsidizing the electric industry already to keep the rates low.  If they were not doing so the prices of electricity would be vastly larger then what you are paying now.  You may ask why do they do this?  Incentive.  Plain and simple, Solar is an expensive way to produce power still but they are trying to create a larger industry in it to refine the technology.  No Company is going to spend several hundred million dollars on a solar farm unless they see a return.  At anything under $0.40-$0.50/kWh right now its just not profitable.  People want Green Energy, your going to pay for it until its refined.

Hydro Electric stations get anywhere from $0.06-$0.13 from what I have seen.  So with all that being said, how do you pay for workers to keep the Powerlines in good condition?  What if a tree falls and takes out a few lines to your house?  that has to be paid for yet most of these number I have provided you show that there is absolutely no profits to pay for the workers let alone infrastructure. And some of the HydroOne workers make GOOD money for what they do.

Do I agree with the business model in place for them?  God No!!!  But its better then the alternative right now of paying what it actually costs to produce power.

As for the Ontario paying the USA 1.1m a day, I would have to see the article to understand the scope of what they are trying to talk about before commenting on it.

OOPS, thats the SAME story from LAST year 2011.  I guess they do this on a yearly basis to stir things up :)

Found it:

http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20110124/ontario-pays-to-rid-power-110124/20110124/?hub=TorontoNewHome

And I have to agree with what this guy said on another forum about it:

QuoteMuch of this is rhetoric.

Quebec pumps millions of dollars worth of electricity into Ontario. New lines are even going up now to feed your businesses, heaters and air conditioners.

As with any contract there are set rates when Quebec sells electricity and set rates to buy back surplus. With electricity you don't just say, I have to much, Here, take the extra back, like what some of the simpletons here are saying.

Ontario buys a predetermined amount and may demand more. If they bought too much then Hydro Quebec will buy it back at a lower rate than what Ontario paid for it.

Same is true for the New England states. The U.S. Pays Hydro-Quebec a fixed rate for X amount. If they don't use it and can't use it, Hydro Quebec will buy it back at Y amount and redistribute it.

Example:
Ontario tells Quebec they want 1000 kilowatts of power at a 30-years contract rate of 1$ per kilowatt. Then they say, oh we have too much. Quebec will buy it back at 20-cents per kilowatt.

So do you pay to give back more than what was contractually agreed upon? Of course! Electricity isn't free you know.

The blurb about how "Ontario is doing our neighbours a huge favour at the expense of consumers here" is pure rhetoric and political bullshit meant to stir-up the people.

Even the U.S. sells back it's power at a lower cost to Quebec to redistribute when they buy too much.

So really Ontario has a choice.
Don't buy electricity and generate all their own stuff which would cause black-outs across most of eastern Ontario and leave people to freeze to death since Ontario can't support itself.

Buy per contract and whine about how they pay Quebec for unused excess they can't use.

That CTV news story is pure and utter fluff (which is what we have all come to expect of CTV). Very slanted, and meant to do nothing but feed pure B.S. to the people without even saying why this happens.

Pure fluff.

All in all, it would cost MORE to shut down a Nuclear Power station then it would to beg people to take the extra power away.  Nuclear Power stations don't have an ON and OFF switch :)

It was just on CTV Ottawa 6pm news last week or the week before. I tried to find it on their site and to Google it but I couldn't find the story. I didn't find the one you are referring to either. As I said though. We're just plain robbed as Canadians and are becoming a minority in our own country.
I do agree though. Without knowing the full aspect or the grander scheme of things maybe what we pay isn't so bad. I guess also we have the opportunity to shut our tanks down if we so desire to save money on hydro.  I don't take trips or smoke or drink. None of that stuff and neither does my hubby. So, we justify the expense of our hobby that we both enjoy very much.

Did you install those ceiling fans. Winter is almost over......lol

I bought them, but they're sitting on the floor in the walk in closet in my bedroom  :-\

I took a look at the box in the ceiling and I'm pretty sure I need someone to beef the joists up because I bought the biggest ones I could find when they were 50% off at Lowes in October...
I haz reef tanks.
