I am going on a weeks holidays and plan to put those little block feeders into my tanks. One of them is a freshwater tank with cichlids, so they should be fine, but I have been advised that these blocks do not work for a saltwater tank. Is this true, and if so, what do people suggest? Plan B was to give a really good feed on Monday morning and then feed first thing when I get back on Friday. It was also suggested that I put in some algae strips to supplement. Having someone come in middle of the week is not an option.

Fish can travel up to 48hrs in little plastic bags to get here.. no food, nothing but the small water they ship in... so 72 hours in an established tank is not a stretch.

Can't you buy an automatic fish feeder?  I have an Eheim one and it works awesome.

Everything survived. I knew the cichlids would live, seeing as I had the holiday block for them. I gave a good feeding to the salts on Monday morning, and also put a couple of seaweed sheets on a clip in the tank as well. All the livestock made it, although the tank is a little greener than before, although I picked up a tigertail on my trip, so he should get to work quickly.
