HD Camcorders

There are way too many options out there.  I'm looking for one that has a fairly compact size, has an extremely fast auto focus (for action shots because I have a very busy kid), has a microphone jack for an optional external microphone and that has decent stability control so I can potentially mount it to my dash to record neighbourhood tours.  I guess I need a tripod attachment too...if that doesn't come standard.

Everything else is just bonus.  My budget is no more than $500

Any suggestions, or anything I should absolutely NOT get?
