you need to get the skimmer going properly and you will not have any of these issues, I used a bh1000 for 2 years they do plenty surface skimming, proper installation is the key.

Not wanting to argue with Az, I methinks we disagrees on good surface skimming.  The BH-1000 has a few linear inches (3 or 4) of water contact and the teeth in the overflow are pretty deep. 1/2 inch under water.

For an average tank of 60-100 gallons, typical dimensions:

My definition of good skimming is 12" of skimming and only taking the top 1/4inh or less.

My definition of great skimming is 24-36" of surface skimming and only taking the top 1/8 inch or less.

You see, on your BH-1000 the surface gunk will build up in the teeth at the surface due to tension.  The water will slip in under neath the buildup because the teeth are so deep, and then your not surface skimming until you remove the blocked teeth.

This is avoided when you use the coast-to-coast design on overflows, a better design than the teeth system.

I'm not saying the skimmer is crap.  Is a good piece of kit.  I would ensure a power head is pushing water at the surface towards the intake/overflow box, this way it will increase the performance of surface skimming by not letting gunk on th surface, like in the glove, mess with the surface skimming action.

I think that the BH1000 is "great for what it is"...  Obviously, a nice coast-to-coast overflow is ideal.  But in cases that this is not possible, and an HOB skimmer is needed, this one does the trick.

I mod'ed my MCE600 with a TOM Surface skimmer that is about 1/2 the size of the surface skimmer of the BH1000 and it kept the surface clean.  It really doesn't take much - just SOME suction from the surface helps.

I don't know what adjustments there are to adjust the suction from the top and bottom of the intake...

no skimmer is good enough if kept switched off friends.  ;D
