Multi stack of fresh tanks.

Hey guys. I have a question as I haven't done this way before. I know that if I keep say 4 tanks of saltwater fish hooked up together I use one sump full of rock for filtration but if I do it with fresh water is it kinda the same reasoning?? Thanks in advance.

You can still do a sump still filtration for a freshwater tank. Same concept but just arrange your partition differently. If you come to the club meeting there's a few of us that run sump style filtration.

My cousin in Toronto breeds cichlids and has a really cool setup that uses a pretty big Rubbermaid tote as a sump. Tanks are drilled at the top and the mid way point and plumbed separately. When he wants to do a water change he shuts off the return pump and closes the valve on the top return plumbing to the sump and opens a valve on the lower plumbing that goes to a drain and gravity drains the tanks to the mid point of the tank, then closes that valve and pumps conditioned water back not the sump and up to the tanks. Almost automated 50% water change system on 40 tanks...pretty ingenious.

I've also seen people using brute garbage cans and horse troughs to make sumps for multiple tanks...like this:
