Hey Ovas forum,

I'm currently using a aquaclear 20 on my small 3.4 gallon tank and I think it might be a little over kill. It's been working fine but i'm just wondering if anyone can recommend a good hob filter I could use that is more designed for the size. I want to keep it a HOB to save space in the aquarium.

I've seen good reviews on this AZOO MIGNON FILTER 60

and

Deep Blue Professional ADB88700 Biomaxx Nano Filter

any advise could be good. I'm looking for something super quiet as the tank is in my living room.

Cheers everyone.

I have a Azoo Mignon Filter 60 on a 4 gallon tank and it is very quiet.

OK great, i've heard good reviews for it. Might place an order for one later today!

I like to over filter, as I think most people do. Would people recommend getting

or

I only ask as the bigger version is still quite a low gallon per hour and its only $2 more. It would also allow me to add more filtration media into it.

Cheers,

I have the DeepBlue version of this. You can go bigger if you want as you can always control flow. These little things are amazing. Have one on my 5Gal Flval Chi. Quiet and does great.

yea I thought that I could go to the slightly larger version. The aquaclear 20 I have on there at the moment is great but the glow rate is double the amount of these small ones.

I will try one of them out for sure.

Have  you reduced the flow.  Max gph on a 20  is 100 however that is without media.  Also the flow adjust on the filter can reduce flow by 66% on all a/c hob filters.

Yes, I have the flow at its lowest setting.  The aquaclear 20 is suggested for 5-20gal's. As mine is a 3.4 I thought it might be OK, I mean it's doing fine. Just the plants growing under it are suffering a little and the fish dont love that area of the tank that much.

So I thought if I get a filter which is suggested for nano up to 10 gal. The reduced flow might be about right.

You can try putting a rock or something at the output of the AC20 to see if it will help reduce the flow coming out.  At one point, I had PVC pipe with holes drilled into it across the output of my AC110 because I thought the flow was too much.

I put a small sponge at the output to reduce the flow. It has worked a little but it doesn't take a lot to block the flow and the HOB starts to overflow.

Somethings years ago, I had a similar problem.
If memory serves me, I remember cutting two blades  on the impeller (opposite  each other).
If you try this, make sure you have a backup impeller. Do so at your risk lol

matttimms49

thanks for the idea. I may give that a miss because if I mess it up I wont have a filter. There must be so many cool hacks for filters out there though.

Cheers

Any more opinions on whether to get the Azoo 60 or 150 for the 3.4 gallon?

Thanks guys

lucius

You could always get both and sell the one you don't end up using.  ;)
