UV Filter Cleaning Yes?/No?

As I cleaned my various crud covered hoses during my weekend tank maintenance, my attention was drawn to my UV filter, and the fact that it's been installed for several months without any maintenance whatsoever.  Judging by my hoses etc., I would think the interior would be pretty slimy!  Do UV filters require any maintenance?  I appreciate their delicacy so I'm thinking I should leave it alone? Your thoughts will be appreciated.
