Waterhome 3 filter question

Unlike the majority of people here who seemed to have purchased huge tanks, I only purchased a Waterhome 3 on boxing day to start a betta tank (3 gallons).

I have a question regarding the filter on this small tank for anyone who is familiar with it.  The built-in filter has a bit of a flow through problem and I am thinking that the supplied filters pads are not the best idea.

Would it be good idea to remove the filter pads and just put some BioMax in the filter reservoir and let the water flow through that instead?
