Hi,

The best places to buy fish in my opinion are Superpet and Aquarium Services.  These guys generally take very good care of their fish, and have a much lower probability of disease in their tanks.  I personally like Superpet the best.  They have a 15 day guarantee for fish with a 100% refund.  Aquarium services is also an excellent store and they really take care of their fish.  The Kanata location of both Superpet and Big Al's has very knowledgable and friendly staff.

I have some fish for sale as well if you are interested.  I have some guppies, gold danios and minnows that I am selling for $1 each.

We have to agree, the best place to buy fish is Super Pet (Barhaven or Kanata--you've got to visit both stores because they get different types of fish in) Their 15 day guarantee is Super! The fish are healthy there, tanks are clean, and staff is helpful. They are always getting in new stock.

We buy our Ottocinclus at Walmart, because they are cheaper.

When we can't find what we want at the above two we go to Big Al's, staff are great there too, just the guarantee is not as long, and the prices are a bit higher than SP.

I like the SP 15 day guarantee, but frankly I find they don't have the selection Big Al's does.  You don't see apistos or german rams at Super Pet, but they do show up at Big Al's.  Plus, I notice you tend to only have the more "popular" fish as Super Pet.  Example, you'll see tons of neons, glowlights, cardinals etc, but you won't see the other tetras like head and tail light, green fire, etc....

The local small shops can either be really good or really bad.  Either they have fish just as a "suppliment" to their existing pet store and don't know jack about 'em.  Or they are really well educated and as a small shop can pay more attention to detail than the bigger chains.

Usually, it is more the former and not the latter (unfortunately) but there are always the exceptions.

I mostly buy from Big Al's, since it's closer.  But more delicate fish (otos, smaller tetras etc.) I'll go to Super Pet just in case I end up needing that 15 day guarantee.

Hi Eagle_Eye,

I sent you a response, but you never replied.  You are welcome to come over to my place and pick them up.

I have had the most success with Superpet Barrhaven.
I think it depends on what Fish you are interested in - some are definitely better kept at certain stores.

I have found that the fish I have bought at Big Al's in the east end are healthy, and rarely do I have any problems. The staff are very helpful there, they even offer to babysit your children, how can you beat that kind of service!!!
