does anyone know any requirements of wood like size/density/type to make a stand for an aquarium? i just want it like a rectangle from how high it's going to sit to the floor. very basic.
Does it have to be a certain type of wood or thickness so that it doesn't crack upon an extended period of load? Does the grain of the wood have to be horizontal or vertical?

I ahve never made anything out of wood and i dont' have a woodshop. Would anyone discourage me from making one?

can anyone recommend a website with directions on how to build one?

Thanks!

I've only made one of my own. I did a simple frame out of 2x4s with my corners being two 2x4s screwed together. I got the miscuts that were about half the price of the other ones, if not even cheaper... Cost me less than $20 for the wood. I had the screws and stuff on hand, so don't know how much that'd cost.

Seems sturdy enough to me.

darkdep and I built mine out of regular 2x4's this past weekend.

The stand is 48x18x30 and will be holding my 75 gallon without any problems.  I need to snap a few pics and post them up for people to see.  I believe I used 6 full 8 foot 2x4's and is boxed it in with knotty pine wainscotting.  Total cost will be under $50 once trimmed and stained.

Home made is the way to go for big stands.

Mine looks very similar to this one...except the middle uprights are positioned differently.

wow that looks really cool. Thanks for the advice. I'm probably not as handy as any of you but i'll give it a shot this summer and take pictures to let you know how it goes!

THanks!
