i was just curious..i will be buying a 110 gallon tank and must admit im not too crazy about metal stands..i was wonderig if the standard 48x18 stand you can find at big al's woudl be enough to support the weight of a full tank

thank you

For a tank that size, I personally would recommend a wood stand. I have a metal stand for one of my 55 gallons, and am anxious everytime I look at it. I don't know what it is, I just don't trust it...

and what i described the typical stand over at big al's of 48" width and 18" depth would be good enough you think?

last think i want is to throw in 900 lbs of water just to have it crash in my livingroom..sure i have absorbent carpets but still lol

thanks

The stands you can buy at LFS's are quite capable of supporting the tanks they are sized for, in perfect conditions.  Store bought stands are capable of great upward strength, but tend to be less forgiving in the areas of flex and any side-to-side movement...also, if your floor isn't perfectly level, trouble can ensue.

Wooden stands can easily be beefed up with a couple of 2x3 or 2x4 pieces screwed strategically into place, for more piece of mind tho.  Lots of people go this route.

I'm not a big fan of metal stands myself however they are plenty strong.  It's just a personal preference.
