Ok.. im going to buy a 4 tube fixture to sit on my tank..

most likely T8..

are there 48" t-8 aqaurium lights available? i've seen 36" and 42" but no 48"

i see lots of T12 48"

also what bulbs should i use on a planted tank..

i want at least 1 bulb that enhances fish colors... and others that help promote plant growth..

even if there generic bulbs from HD..

check out buchanon lighting. You might also want to look into overdriving the bulbs too.

you can buy the fixtures from HD. you buy the bulbs from buchanon. overdriving involves wiring a 2 ballast bulb to 1 bulb so you get twice the brightness out of 1 bulb.

wiring a two-bulb ballast to one bulb? Do you need special bulbs? how safe is it and how long do the bulbs last? I'm interested and wonder if there is more info on this i can read.

You can pretty much overdrive the any flourescent bulb. It's pretty safe when done properly. The bulbs last fo about a year.
