Planning on building a sump filter using an old 20G my dad gave me. Question - If I'm feeding into this sump via an overflow box (using 1" piping), what should I use as a pump for the return? Would a pump rated at 700GPH be too big?

Thx.

Consider the 'head', or how high the pump has to push the water up.
For eg.  a mag7 at 0 head is rated 700g, but at 4 foot head rated 500g.

I use a mag7 with 3/4" InnerDiameter hose at around 4 feet.
Hear using 1" ID is better, but haven't tried...think I have enough flow now.
My drain is 1.5" and can handle the flow no problem.
Not sure if I would be comfortable reducing it down to 1 inch, tho...need to
keep some room for air.

You might consider 1.5" drain as well -- just increase asap after the bulkhead.

If noise is an issue, go with hose...

its is easyer to get a bigger pump then to get a smaller one. because you can always split off some of the the return and put it back in your sump, but it is hard to stop it from comig down into the tank.
