BA Innes Guarantee?

I bought 6 rummy-nosed tetras from BA Innes last weekend.  They have developped a serious case of ich and I am wondering if anyone knows whether they will take them back?  I would expect them to stand by their stock but I have known BA Innes to kinda stingy, so just wondering if it's worth trying.
Tomorrow will have been 6 days since purchase.

Thanks,
Zoe

Guarantee is 5 days, perhaps if the ones in store had gotten sick as well the guarantee could be extended, but we've had no issues with the ones in store.

Zoe

You work there?  Your's are okay? I'm glad to hear that... unfortunately each one we got on Friday is covered with Ich.

Steve_2

Have you tried to simply treat them? It would probably be less trouble than catching them and returning them.

I've already caught them (boy was that tough! a 90gallon tank is way too tall lol) and am treating them (well, with salt, at this point... all the stores are closed, after all :P)

Zoe

Oh, Matt, if your's don't have any, they are probably carrying the ich and it just hasn't shown up yet.  Probably couldn't hurt to throw some salt in their tank and up their temperature so it doesn't happen to someone else.

mseguin

Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry to hear yours aren't doing well. It's just that if ours are doing fine, its hard to assume its the store's fault. Which tank did you get them from? We had some from a while ago, and then got some new ones in last week, possibly stress was the cause.

Steve_2

Well, it is a little too late for tonight as you already said, but tomorrow I would get some treatment. If you want, I can give you some of my QuICK Cure. It is cheap, but does the job nicely. I've used it on tetras before with no problems.

Steve

Zoe

Well, it's not the store's fault... You can't have known if you don't see any ich, obviously  :) But there's no question that I got these fish from BA with the Ich, which manifested itself when they were moved.
I got them last Friday... Not sure which tank they were from, there were a lot of other RN Tetras in the same tank, all fairly small (adult neon tetra sized)... I know that doesn't help.  They were in the Tetras aisle, maybe 4-5 tanks down the row from the plants/liverock/newts...

Steve: I've heard Quick Cure works well.  I guess I shall have to treat the 90gallon tank for safety, right? (I didn't quarantine  >:( hard lesson learned for Zoe). Where are located? I'd love to mooch some :)

Matt's right. The parasite is normaly found in many tanks in a "dormant" form. Fish are usually unaffected, but stress cuases their immune system to weaken. This makes them successible to parasite infections. The good thing though is that if you treat your fish, they will most likely recover nicely.

I live downtown....Elgin @ Mcleod.

I'm not sure if I buy the whole "ich is dormant in all tanks" theory, but I do agree that a lot of fish probably do have it and it doesn't show up till some major trauma.  But then, all seven fish are just covered in it.  And it's been only 5 days since I got them (as of today, anyway. Six days tomorrow.)
As you say, it's probably best that I just treat them and stop fussing...  But ya know, it would be nice to know that an LFS stands behind their ichy ( ;)) fish... But hey, can't win em all, and can't take back every single fish with a white spot, eh!

Send happy thoughts to the fishes... despite their illness they are still eating like RNs!

Aw thanks for the offer Steve but I'm all the way at St Laurent and Montreal ;) I'll have to go pick some up at the Gloucester PetCetera tomorrow, I hope they carry it!

RN tetras are brutal for ich, yuo have to be real careful with them, first time I got them I lost 3/6 to ich, second time I managed to lsoe none, but made sure to qurantine.

Zoe

Really? I thought RN Tetras were known for being hardy.  What a bummer.

I hope they pull through! My other 3 are lonely.

mseguin

They're hardy once settled, its jsut they tend to be delicate (IME, and from what I've heard from others) during the transition period, both to disease as well as pH shock etc. If yuo can treat the remaining ones, they should survive for a long time.

fishycanuck

My humble experience is to expect a case of ich whenever I add LFS stock. I quarantine the new fish if I can, otherwise I do a pre-emptive treatment with Aquarisol.  The whole process of catching, transporting and releasing new fish is stressful.
I have never had ich in fish which I purchased from members, either privately or through auction.
As for BA Innes and their guarantee - never had any trouble there! I think the staff are great.  :)

Zoe

One of them died overnight. Two down, 5 still alive. Poor bubbies.
I wish I had known how susceptible they were to Ich... now ya tell me!

I guess I've gotten a little too comfortable with not having Ich.  I've had such good fortune lately so this has hit me like a tonne of bricks.

Ya, BA Innes staff is great, if you can get a hold of them.  I stood around twenty minutes and had to get the manager (?) to get me the RN Tetras last time.  >:( Maybe it was a sign lol.

And TD Canada Trust is screwing with me, too. -kicks-

This is just not my week!  But I shall be strong, it's what the fishes would have wanted.  ;)

fishycanuck

My suggestion: take the fish carcass (RIP) and mail it to the bank.
Just an idea  ;D

Exactly my past experience with these fish. Bought 10. They developed ich while in qt. 2 died. 8 survived and grew to be large. Eventually gave them away - save for two that refused to be caught. My flowerhorn got them, though. Lol.
