ok i tested my tank today and i have:

Temp 78
ph 6.6
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
nitrate 0
iron 0
kh 1
gh 3

so am i cycled?

also how do i add nitrates? fish?

do i do my 90% water change to get rid of green water?

Thanks!!

BigDaddy

Had you added 3ppm the day before?

If so, then yes you are cycled.  Do a major water change and you are ready to go

Adding nitrate for your plants means dosing KNO3.

In a 75 gallon tank, 1/2 tsp of KNO3 will give you just over 6ppm of NO3.

Add fish slowly, allowing 4 to 6 weeks before you add more livestock.

A large water change will not get rid of green water.

Marx

i cycled with 3ppm ammonia i can almost fully stock right away?

Marx

and what exactly do i need to add? name of chemical??

BigDaddy

What types of fish are you planning on keeping?  I wouldn't recommend fully stocking the tank until we know what fish you'll be keeping.

KNO3 is potassium nitrate.  You can get it at hydroponics stores.  As well, some stump remover is pure KNO3.  This can be had at garden centers... HOWEVER ENSURE THERE IS NOTHING ELSE IN IT OTHER THAN KNO3.

Marx

ok bigdaddy.. i got many different guidelines lol...

first everyone said when i do a fishless cycle and finish i can aded most of my stock.. cause fish don't produce 3ppm..

I plan on keeping Tetras, Guppies, clown loaches, Cories, dwarf cichlids, maybe angel fish..

BigDaddy

No major waste producers there.. should be safe to add what you want, as long as you don't overstock the tank.

Marx

im going to purchase most of the easy ones lol...

like guppies/cories/tetras/SAE's!!

dpatte

if you added 3PPM of ammonia yesterda, and have none today, and no nitrite today, then your tank has a big enough culture of bacteria to support a tankful of fish. (your cycle is great)

Marx

yup i add my 7 testdroppers full a day..  which is 3-4ppm.. but reading only show 1.4-2.4ppm on test kit right after adding ammonia(for last week up to now)

but by Tommorrow  there are no ammonia or nitrites.. and probably no nitrates lol.. dam green water is sucking it all up!!

zapisto

did you test phospate ?
do you have plants ?
if no welcome green water, if you have no plant , ask yourself where the damn nitrate go :) :)

Marx

no phospates.. well ~.1
No nitrates.. (my tap water has ~10ppm..)
i have about 2 dozen plants..

luvfishies

Fill er up with fish, for crying out loud!

No matter how overstocked you go, NO fish will produce 3 ppm ammonia per day, which is what your biobugs are capable of handling.

Manytanks phoned a few hydroponics stores looking for it, and was told after 9/11 they don't carry it (!?rocket science after all--LOL). Did finally find it at Ritchies but only in 25 kg size. Still looking for it, in the meantime using lf$ fert$.

p.s how do you make the text you're replying to go into that neat shaded box thingy? anyone?

Upper Valley Hydroponics carries it.  That's where I get mine... its on Antares Drive.  Hunt Club and Prince of Wales is the closest intersection.

They sell it for $4.95

Thanks BigDaddy, (I'm still trying to work out this quote thing), I will phone them. So this would replace the lfs NPK right? And be as good?

BigDaddy

No, it will only replace the N and K, not the P.

For phosphate, you need to get KH2PO4, a.k.a Mono Potassium Phosphate.
