How do you keep your trumpet snails in check?  Will they level out, or will they continue to reproduce like mad until they've taken over my tank?
Is there any downside to having a million of these in my tank?
I don't want to kill them ALL since I understand that they're good for a few things, and don't eat any plants.

You'll only have as many trumpet snails as the environment can support.  When they hit "critical mass" for the tank, you won't see the numbers increase anymore.

Snails will never eat growing, thriving plants.  In fact, the plants will love the fact that the MTS burrowing into the substrate helps keep anaerobic pockets from forming.

I'd like to add to what BigDaddy said is that trumpet (MTS) snails are not plant eaters - they prefer to eat fish-food leftover... Only when there is nothing to eat they can switch to algae, but never to plants.

And you may have hundreds of them and you will never know about it.

If you have a massive number of MTS and the pop continues to grow it is a good indication that you are overfeeding (that is assuming that your intention is not to feed the growing MTS pop.).  You may consider feeding less.  try to keep up the frequency of feeding times but cut the amount you feed.  It is very difficult of under feed your fish but easy to overfeed.  The MTS greatly reduce the risk of overfeeding but they can be unsightly and anoying.  I love having them and add them to all my planted tanks.  But the pop. does stay under control with conservative feeding.

Gee I'll trade you some of my little round snails for some of your trumpet snails.  :D
