What do you feed your Oscars?

Aiglos

For its staple daily food I feed a mixture between Wardley Color Flakes, Wardley Large Pellets and Shrimp Pellets. I have to buy my food at Wal-Mart and Wardley is the line they carry I am not endorsing this product.

As Treats I feed frozen bloodworms,  I also go to the bait shop and get them earth worms once and a while,  Crickets from my LFS and also Goldfish.

Marx

I heard crickets are great when they are young..

add girth to the fish.. aswell as beef heart?

slickshooter

Worms are a great replenishing snack for O's.Buy a few from your local tackle shop as well as a styrofoam cooler.Fill the bottom of the cooler with corn meal a few inches thick toss the worms in and fill  the rest with topsoil and dampen (not soak) with water if soil gets very dry.Alternatively add a few potatoes and the worms will "drink" from them.

Wormman.com   has plenty of info although some is a little overboard  I think.

also if your your oscars are large enough go to big als or any other lfs an get a crayfish or 2 the are also good food for oscars an its kinda fun to watch them attack it lol

Aiglos

Or to the bait store where you can get 20 of them for the price of one crayfish at Big Als.

Julie

We've been feeding earthworms from outside, weather permitting
Unfortunately along with the feeder fish came a case of Ich.

slickshooter

Earthworms from outside are a good cheap source but i hope you dont use chemicals on your lawn! Remember whatever the worm ingests your fish will be getting.

StylinT

I would also stay away from the feeder fish there is nothing nutritional in them for the oscars an feeder fish are never keept in clean healthy tanks most of the time
oscars will also develop HITH (hole in the head)

Aiglos

But they are soo much fun to feed to your fish... I know they are highly unrecommended, but quarentine em for a week, feed them well and I don't see the problem with the odd feeder fish snack.

my oscars love to receive feeders.

luvfishies

The gold colour of feeder goldfish actually inhibits a vitamin uptake, contributing to HITH and LLE.

Also, they are fatty, and some people have noted blindness in fish fed exclusively or majorly with feeder goldfish.
