Sorry about the confusion when said to stack your slate .But Laura "s pics speak for me.And using a hammer to get more manageable pieces is also a good option. Flat rocks are nice to build with.
Here in the pic ,I have use some flat rocks in my fry tank.

I have a 50 lb bag of quartz sitting in my kitchen (and has been for a few months now) but while waiting to clean it etc, I bought a handful of pink quartz from big al's tonight now I'm tempted to do my entire tank bottom in quartz...
