Just wondering what will be a good size tank for beginner to grow plants only. I know the bigger the better, but I am just a beginner and don't want to jump on it until I get a hand on it.

And what kind of plants should I get ?

I currently have a spare 20 gal tank which measures 30 x 12 x 12.

I think this would definitely come down to being a person preference as to what size of tank you would like to have or you're budget restraints.

That 20 gallon would do just fine for a planted tank, but if you want more then it would require a larger tank!  8)

"Short" tanks like the one you mentioned are great.  You don't need massive amounts of light to make sure you get good bottom coverage.

Start off with low light plants like Java fern, java moss, anubias, crypts and others.

Depending on the lighting you put over the tank, you can try stem plants like hygro, rotala, moneywort...

For cover you could do dwarf sag or other grass like plants.

In a tank that small, stay away from sword plants... they will get far too large.
