Does salt water eat away at stuff.  a friend of mine today asked me if my new 90 gal tank was safe for salt water.  He thinks the salt will slowly eat away at the seems holding the tank together.  Do I have to worry about anything?

Answer...not that I know of but I am pretty new to marine one of the vets is sure to chime in.

Hi I've never experienced a problem yet and I know others who have had tanks up and running 6-7 yrs plus w/o problems. Most problems occur when moving tanks or if not set up level, therby putting more pressue on the silicon joints.

Silicon is fine....it's actually hydrophobic which means that it is not wettable.  Salt water won't corrode it.  Metal isn't safe though unless it is very high grade stainless steel.

on another note. you'll want to keep clamps, staples, and all the other nicknacks that are located in the fish mechanical room, above your sump, or above your tank to be as free from metal as possible. salt creep will turn it rusty and ugly. Go plastic go!
