sorry I can't spell anenamis :-[ but do you know if there are any that are compatable with a small reef tank, I've read that many are very difficult to keep, is this true?  :-\

Thanks :)

Heidi

Not always...depends on what type of anemone you get ...I have 2 false perc and 2 bubblt tip anemone's in a 20 long reef. What size is your tank? Some anemone's don't like clowns or don't host them - like some rock anemones I believe.  Your tank may be too small for a long tip anemone.  My false percs have stayed small and they over 1 year old. I have a pair of tomatoes but they do get larger and can be aggressive, similar to cinnamons.

Basically, depending on the size of your tank, you can probably go with a bubble tip and a pair of percs.  Watch the anemone tho - they like to travel around your tank until they pick the spot they want to stay in...for awhile anyways.

Good luck.

The best bet for you is bubble tip anemone (BTA). It is not a native host to oscellaris/percula clowns, but it will host them.
It is the most easiest (if this can be applied to anemones) from hosting anemones, but it is also famous to wandering around the tank if not feel happy. I once slightly changed the direction of from from one of my powerheads and have to say that would not do it again - anemone moved and started looking for a better spot...
If you are wondering why moving anemone is a bad thing, I should say that it will kill any, even very aggressive coral and also may end in your powerhead or overflow. In last 2 cases it will also may kill the tank inhabitants.
The other problem with anemones in small tanks is that anemones should be fed. It is funny, but anemone that wuill pollute the water after feeding prefer high quality water and will start moving around also in case when water parameters are not good. I should say in you case you will have to get skimmer.

So, be prepared and make your tank "anemone-safe" :) If you will be prepared, anemone will live long and probably split for you.

Regards

P.S. Personally I will never put BTA into my 15G tank, but... everybody have ther own opinion.

I agree with GVV a 15 gallon would be to small for a BTA as they do grow larger and if not happy will move and if they move in a 15 gallon it wont take them long to kill corals along there path. Please keep in mind your lighting different anenomes require different lighting with carpets for example requiring a very  high amount of lighting and flower or rock anenomes can live in very little lighting and tube anenomes are non photosynthetic requiring no light at all.

I have two BTAs in my 90, one has the disk size of a small dinner plate and the other the size of a large breakfast plate, picture those two in a 15 gallon... :)

some people report good success with hosting their clowns in less demanding corals. I haven't had any luck getting my pair to move into the Xenia but concider the idea of something less likely to perish. There is study from Garf, I have linked to in the past, that claims up to 80% of all anemones going into beginner SW tanks die.

FishPassion

Very true Ken, 2 of mine have hosted in anything but an anenome the pic in my avatar is a pic of my clown hosting in a clam. Its been in there for the last 6 mths.

mine prefer the torch, moved them into a new tank with a BTA, but the BTA cant sit still.  They hosted it but the BTA kept going down the overflow so I went back to the torch.

BTA, or carpet anemone is definately the ones you would want as a beginner. Many reefers will tell you to never put any anemone in a tank that isn't well established, or basically hasn't been running less than 6 months... I threw a bta in mine after it had been running only 6 weeks, and it's still in there doing fine. It only changed locations recently, after I added a second powerhead. Aside from that, it would have just remained in the same spot and never moved. It kind of depends on what species you get. Many people have them wandering allover the place. Also, you want to make sure that any inlets on powerheads are protected. I've read many stories of anemonies going on the move and then getting sucked into the powerhead. Some sucked right through and sprayed out of the power head and into the tank as a blended anemone.

sorry but I'd have to disagree with most of you.
a small tank is not a good idea for keeping anenomes especially if your new to the hobby.
small tanks can fluctuate in water quality and parameters very fast.
anenomes pretty much need perfect conditions [stable] and most small tank will have powerheads so thats also NOT good.
I'd avoid anenomes all together.

I have a 48" 54 Watt Nova Extreme T5 lighting system.  2 Daylight and 2 Actinic lights.
This is mounting my 90 gal and I was wondering what some good plants, corals and anenamies I could keep.  I'm just a beginner and I don't want to handle anything to fragile.

sniggir

you could easily keep any of the euphilia family, and for that matter most LPS
90 gallon/ 90 gallon sump all male show tank, 75g Accie, 75g masoni reef alonacara, yellow lab and trio of flame backs, 75 gal tawain reef, 75 gal bi500, red shoulder, blue regal,
40 gal breeder  F1 electric blue frierei, 25 gal sunshine peacock males awaiting females, 20 gallon trio albino pleco, 65gal neolamprongus Brachardi pulcher 2 30g fry grow out, 20g hatchery with 4 batches of eggs currently
Starting on a fish wall for breeding more coming soon!

Naw,thats a really nice photo.  Just the fish is slightly out of focus.  Thanks for the help! :)

RoxyDog

I have clowns and an anemone in my 12gal.  But you'll never see the clowns host, it's a rock/flower anemone.  I also don't feed it much and it does just fine.  So, you can have both, just maybe not in the exact way you were lookin for?  :)
Tanks: salty nano cube, working on a fresh 125

Life is too short to wake up with regrets.  So love the people who treat you right.  Forget about the one's who don't.  Believe everything happens for a reason.  If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands.  If it changes your life, let it.  Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

rockflower anenomies are about the only one I'd try along with a condy. but for hosting they don't really work to well.

I bought my 90 gal used, it had two Bubble tip anemomies in it & 1 clown who was at home in both.  Since then the BTA have split and I now have four, the clown is at home in all of them!  I wouldn't dare try to introduce another clown, as I'm sure it would be a battle of dominance.  Now if I could only get the BTA's off the rocks, I'd probably want to do a swap for something else.
