I bought sea salt at the health food store can I use this for my sick tank just like aquarium salt?  ???

darkdep

Yes...as long as there is no iodine in it.

I heard that you can as long as there is no yellow prussiate of soda (an anti caking agent).

I am not sure why though... so I'm looking now... on the cichlid-forum.com their article states "The salt used should contain no additives such as yellow prussiate of soda or iodine".

Safe Alternatives to "Aquarium Salt"

- "Kosher Salt"
- "Coarse Salt"
- (And sometimes) "Sea Salt"  (although lately all the Sea Salt I see has iodine and other things added

Coarse salt is my fave, because you can buy it at Bulk Barn for next to nothing.

Another common name for Coarse Salt is Pickling Salt

darkdep

Yes!  Sorry, forgot Pickling salt.

washefuzzy

Thanks guys I remember in the past using pickling salt in a pinch or was that a pinch of pickling salt?  :)

Is that the same as, 'Rock Salt'?

Rock Salt is also the same thing, although it's usually found in larger chunks.  Don't use "road salt" because it's not pure.

My 2 cents........
I have used table salt in the past with my marine tank...
(run out of IO),However was only for a quick water change.
I think the difference between table salt or pickling salt or other
salts already mentioned to the One we buy at M/S or Big/Al's
is the additives they mix in them, like Iodide/strontium/calcium/
magnesium and so on......and not to mention price offcourse,
but over all I think table salts compared to sinthetics salts
are almost the same minus the additives.
cheers.

Can you use that salt they use in the water treatment for well water?

You'd have to check the chemical in the bag.  The more expensive water softener salt isn't actually salt at all, it's KCl (Potassium Chloride).  You're looking for pure NaCl (Sodium Chloride).

YT:  I think the intention here is to compare various kinds of salt to "Aquarium Salt", i,e the stuff they sell as a health additive to freshwater tanks.  "Marine Salt" such as Instant Ocean and Red Sea have a whole plethora of other things in it.  I would never suggest using this stuff for a marine tank.

After posting I realized he was talking about
F/W and comparison of salts......However me too would never suggest using
table salt in S/w.....I was only stating that I had an emergency
with running out of salt and was forced to use Table salt.
given the circumstances I Appologize for my opinion which I posted.
