I'm in the process of setting a South American Cichlid tank and would like a similar look as the picture above.
What kind of branch can be used for this and is there anything I need to do to keep it at the surface?

Also, where can I find some reasonably priced malaysian or mopani driftwood in Ottawa?

For driftwood send a message to Ottawa Discus. I got an absolutely huge and amazing piece from him, it's about 27" long and 24" high and it was a very good price.

To me it looks like mangrove root, but that is just a guess. It is quite a nice piece.

Very nice!  I'm still not sure where I could find a root system like that though.  I'll have to look around.
