What can I put with my Africans

I'm looking into adding another type of fish in my tank but not a cichlid or at least not an African one.  I have a common pleco and a red tail shark right now with them but would like to add something else somewhat unusual to the African world of Aquaria and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for other types of tropical fish I could add to my tank, a fish that adapts well to alkalyne water.... or am I asking for too much lol

there are some really nice Syno's to look at. They are tough as nails and pretty cool in their own right.

They even have some large ones at BA on Innes Syno's cats that is

I have some rainbows with mine.  I was skeptical at first but this comes from Spencer Jack and he was right, they are doing great with my malawis.
