Hi all. I have some time of algae growing in my tank I've never seen before. It looks like Maiden's Hair algae except it is not bright green. It is dark, dark green. Here's a pic of Maiden's Hair algae.

Almost a blue iridescence to the tips?

It looks like your pic kennyman except thicker. What is that? No blue hue though.

Tyler: I though it might be hair algae except any pics I see of hair algae it always seems slimey or bright green. This is neither. This tank has been running for almost a year without fish. Nothing really new added to it except a boxer crab about 3 weeks ago.   8)

Hey - If your boxer crab is the same thing as pom-pom crab check out this thread if you haven't already:

I love my boxer/pompom crab and would have a tank just for him!

Thanks for the link. I already read it. I have it in my nano tank. It burrowed a hole/cave about 30 secs after I put it in. He comes out in the evenings every second/third night waving it's anemones. Haven't had the kids name him/her yet though. It usually comes out after they've gone to bed! LOL  ;D

I think I found what it is. Cladophora algae, but the marine variety. It looks exactly like the pics...except instead of being in a ball shape, it is in a tuft shape growing on the rock.

I had posted on a tuft algae we had in the tank a while back.  Someone told me it was hair algae.

Here is the picture I found that resembled ours on google images. Ours was bit more brown than green: http://www.reefcorner.com/images/TuftAlgae.jpg.  Finding info on tuft algae was hopeless.  I think this guy made up the name himself.  The pics of hair algae didn't resemble what was growing on the rocks.

We let it grow long enough and it popped right off.
