I aquired a tank that needs some work, it leaks and the glue/epoxy is coming off. I know it will never be perfect i only want it to hold water again. the tank is a 25 gal

please let me know which type to get and where its sold..

thanks

Hey Dave,
What you are looking for is silicone. The best stuff to use is GE silicone 1200 which is what the manufacturers such as AGA use.

davemaria

thanks redbelly.

well i checked out home depot they have GE silicone 2 for glass and is transparent but am concerned about toxic leaks to the water. Where is the GE silicone 1200 sold?

thanks

Hey Dave,
I always forget if it is silicone 1 or 2. One of them specifically says in the warning section "not for aquariums". The other one is perfectly safe to use.

As for the GE silicone 1200 I usually have it in stock in black and clear. It is more expensive than the stuff at home depo, but much stronger.

Home Hardware has a 3 pack for $10 that states that it is aquarium safe

Here is what you need.

Silicone I " Window & Door " it's the aquarium safe one ( see image supplied ).

CAUTION, DO NOT USE THE SILICONE II, it has mildew resistant chemicals in it, and it's not aquarium / fish safe.

i picked up a 3 pack from home hardware and repaired the tank.. currently it has been holding water for more than a week... Pue for the price I have enough to last me a very long time...

Out of curiosity, how long and how strong was the off-gassing of acetic acid (vinegar smell) during the curing process for GE I? I'll be applying a 3D background to one of my tanks and don't really want to stink us out of our condo while doing so...

How did you repair it?

i had to take off the epoxy on the long sides, it was peeling and there were gaps. im guessing the previous owners used the tank for a gerbils or something as it looked like it was eaten away at..
