Well, so far I can say that I have nothing bad to say about it.  :)

It is definitely worth to purchase if you are looking for some way to control you tank way past the basics of lights on/off, water pump control etc. This machine is capable of so much more, and when you start adding accessories to it you can then monitor different parameters of you tank and use the profilux to regulate them. i.e. calcium,alkalinity,salinity.......

ATO and water changes are one feature that I find pretty cool. Basically you can program the profilux to do WC on it's own without your intervention. (with the right equipment of course) So this basically eliminates the need to remember to do a WC and you no longer have to carry heavy buckets around.  8)

You can also record certain parameters of your tank so you can see what happening throughout the day/night. And with the sms text unit you can receive text messages telling you if any of the parameters are out of line and you need to leave work immediately to save your precious tank.  :D ;D

Anyways that's all i'm gonna say for now as the list of it's possibilities would be really really long and I don't feel like typing that long  ;)

That depends what you want to use it for.

If you want to dose with the balling method look into getting the dosing pack as you do get a better deal since it's at an introductory price. and you can just buy a digital power bar to add on. this is the link to it: http://ottawainverts.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=568_40_57&products_id=395

If your looking to just get a controller for your lights, pumps skimmer..... Get the beginner pack. This is what I got to start off with. Aqua digital/ottawa inverts ( the distributors in ottawa for this product) have special at the moment....You get the controller, 6 outlet digital powerbar, rs232 cable, temperature probe, ph probe, 4.00 and 7.00 Ph calibrating solutions . This is basically everything you need to get started, from there you can get add-ons to do further things.

Another nice thing I found about GHL profilux is that all their firmware and software updates are free. So basically if they decide to add certain features to their database you get them instead of having to buy their newer controller.

Programming isn't hard at all once you wrap your mind around it. It took me about 15 mins to figure it out and have it all programmed for the basics. If your good at programming things, they have a thing called programming logic. Basically with this you can get the controller to do certain things after a series of pre determined things. Such as if your water level is low and salinity is low = refill with saltwater. Or Water level low and salinity high = refill with freshwater. I haven't figured this out yet but GHL is supposed to be in the process of translating their german manual for this into english.

is there any models that can check clacium and magnesium?

There are Cards and Probes to read calcium but the technology of the probes is not there yet. The probes are very expensive and only last 6 months. So basically yes the controller can reed Calcium (not sure about Mg) but the probes need to catch up in technology.

This is a problem that exists period for any Ca probes, not exclusively to Profilux or anything.

Oh, and any Profilux plus 2 controller works, you just insert the expansion card :)

Just like the additional ph cards.
Personally I prefer doubling up on your card to maximize your controller. You can buy expansion cards with one or 2 ports on them so I would advise getting the card with 2 ports (such as ph and ORP) on them.
