Lights on one 2 timers. First timer comes on with single fixture & turns on CO2. One hour later 2nd timer turns on double fixture. After 11 hours single fixture and CO2 shuts-off. One hour later twin fixture shuts off. Lights on total of 12 hours.

The bubble counter is set at 3 to 4 bubbles/sec. Pressure is at 25 psi. I designed the diffuser so the water goes in the top from the canister. The CO2 also goes in the top. The water flows out the bottom then up to the spraybar. There are no bubbles remaining when it enters the tank. The spraybar sits under the water about 2.5". On the 3 way one is capped off the other feeds my Amazon tank.

I fertilize using the Tom Barr EI dosing method. I do not like adding the dry ferts so I use these links for pre-mixing and calculating my ferts: Dosing Calculator, Estimative Index Explained & Tom Barr's EI light: for those less techy folks. Once mixed they last 3 months or more. I just measure and pour. Also I add Flourish Root Tabs but cut them in half then sick into the substrate especially near the heavy rooted plants like swords & crypts.

Look at his signature...
Poor guy is suffering from MTS and needs some way to get a break from the amount of water changes he would have to do if he didn't use the extra filtration! ;D

Yeah, that is a good idea. It reminds me a little bit to this topic:http://ovas.ca/index.php?topic=29860.msg194855#msg194855 - I still think having a separate forum section for this kind of presentations is more suitable than a sticky. Also, would find the presentation of one tank per thread a little more clear.

Nice tanks anyway, Dan. :)

55 gallon 48"x12" footprint

Two bulb Shoplight fixture with standard white reflectors (80W total)

Rena XP1 canister filter for water circulation.

250W heater

Substrate consists of 1.5" of bagged "Black Earth" amended with 25% playsand. Capped with a crushed granite/fluorite mixture.

Plant list:

Cyptocryne wendtii
Ludwigia repens
Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green'
Anubias barteri
Java moss
Java fern

School Cherry Barbs
One adult Angel
1m/1fm bristlenose pleco
1 skunk loach
2 leopard corries
1 otto
3 marbled hatchets

  • Fissidens fontanus
  • Riccia fluitans

Fauna

  • 6 Aphyocharax rathbuni

Experiences
While growing crypts usually doesn't require much, they do thrive vividly in a bright environment. The well known crypt-meltdown was the biggest challenge I was faced. Most troubles came down to insufficient CO2 levels and low flow. Also, relying on the eco substrate was a bit too naive; intensive root fertilization is required to keep the crypts growing. The low hardness of Ottawa's tap water is the next problem and has to be increased a bit (eco hardens the water initially, but after a few months you will have to take over).

I am very pleased with Marsilea hirsuta; it grows at very slow compared to Glossostigma, but gives an even nicer carpet. It mixing a bit with the Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, which I only added to save it from dying in an other tank. Both plants seem to complement each other quite well in growth and shape.

Maintenance
Very low for an high-tec tank: weekly 50% water change, monthly sponge cleaning, daily fertilization via tailored EI, with NO PRUNING :) - what takes most of the time keeping a tank like this running

Can`t wait to see the rest of fischkopps set ups  ;) ( there is lot`s more)

Folks take a look @ Kennyman`s set up, prime example of what can be done without co2 injection & high lights ( which i`m addicted to  ;D), thanks for sharing Kennyman.

Jesse

Very nice tanks everyone!

That 15g Fischkopp is one of my favorite all time tanks - so far atleast! Crypts are one of my favorite plants, and you used them very nicely IMO.

fischkopp

Thanks guys. Stay tuned ...
