Another carbon question.

The only tank I use carbon for in my tylomelania snails as they seem to be super sensitive.  I've just moved them to a tank filtered only with an air driven sponge filter. 

If I just sit a media bag full of carbon in there near the sponge, will it actually do anything?  Or does it really need to be inside a filter where the water is flowing through it?

Hi Irene
It would work but I don't think hanging carbon it would be as effective as having a flow through it.  I believe carbon's life as a contaminate remover decreases rapidly with the buildup of bacteria and organisms on it's surface.

What about putting a cheap corner filter in with just carbon as well?

How about placing the carbon bag on top of the sponge filter with the tube removed. That way the air will push the water through the carbon. Just a thought...
