I will be in Ottawa staying about 12 minutes from the Chateau Laurier (attending a course at CL during the week)  Any good fish stores close by?  Anything I should check out?  I have been told I have to try the beaver tails, what exactly are they?

My short list of recommendations (that are centrally located) would include in no particular order:

Manx Pub (Elgin at Frank) - very yummy food
Behind the Parliament buildings someone takes care of feral cats - I assume the set up is still there - it's a neat project
Beavertails are yummy - I like the Killaloe sunrise (sugar and lemon)
Bytowne Cinema http://www.bytowne.ca/
Mayfair Cinema http://mayfairtheatre.ca/
There's great museums and the art gallery - here are the downtown ones:

Notre Dame Basilica is across the street from the Art gallery, and even for non-religious folk such as myself, it's stunning http://www.notredameottawa.com/main.php?page_numb=0&&lang=en

If you let us know what you like doing when you're not being a fish geek, I'm sure folks will chime in

Unfortunately, I think you're off by the time we have our monthly meeting. :(

Unfortunately I will be back home when your meeting is.  I actually have not had much free time with work and school.  I would really like to check out the feral cats sanctuary.  The
Notre Dame Basilica sounds very interesting.
I am not really into museums unless they have ancient Egyptian displays.
Lemon and sugar beaver tails sounds yummy.
We will be eating in, so I assume there are lots of places at the market to pick up stuff?

In the market there are a few deli's and in the central building there are several food spots. You have to try the place that has the shnitzel on a bun. There's a noodle place and a sushi spot if that appeals to you. Check this link www.byward-market.com

Upstairs in the main market building is a free art gallery.
