How big should the the sump be in relation to the main tank?

Hookup

As big as you can afford both in $$ and space... the more water volume the more stable your system...  ;)

az

min recommended is 1/3 the size of your tank.

Bigger is certainly better in this case!
There is no such thing as too large of a sump.

Shrimpy

My sump is twice the size of my tank.   :D

dines_anan

My Sump is also twice as the tank :)

Hehe... as long as we're comparing.. My display is 92gal, my Sump is 175gal...  Guess i need to find another 10gals so I can join the 2x club... haha...

I think the NORM would be 1/3rd... approx...  But, again, there is no RULE, i've seen sumps at 20gal on 180gal systems, and over the 2x club range... so basically, the rule is get the biggest you can afford $$ and space... most common is under-cabinet space restrictions.. and in that case a look into custom sumps might be wise.

Adam

30 gallon on a 75, soon plumbing in a 20 gallon into that.  Just make sure it holds water if the power fails.

I bet they would let you join. You must have at least 10+ gallons in your pipes and your sump is in the basement if i remember correct?  8)

My sons 50 has a sump thats about 20 gallons, but never that full.

I don't have a sump on my system, but if you can, get a big one!

PMurphy

My 29 gallon BC has a 17 gallon sump. As has been said above, I was restricted to the size of the stand the sump sits in, but the biggest box you can fit in there and still do maintenance on it would be ideal.
