Does anyone know where I can download or obtain plans to build my own aquarium stands??  I am considering a 100 + tank, but can't afford to buy everything at once, so I thought I could save some money by making my own stand.  I am also looking for ideas on building my own aquarium lighting and canopy, so if anyone has ideas on that, it would also be appreciated.

i built my own stand for a 137 gal - you can arrange to see it if you like

I also built mine for a 110.  I built it a little different than David did.    Have a look at my construction pics. they are pretty self explanatory.    http://www.pbase.com/artw/standconstruction    It is very sturdy and rock solid.  you would need a bulldozer to push it over.

Hi
I have built quite a few stands. I mainly use 2 x3 studs from Home Dept. However for a  100gal tank you would have to go with min,. 2 x4s

For a tank that size you need more bracing in the corners and middle. It should not take more than 6 or 8 pc of 2 x 4 s depending on your design  and a half sheet of plywood. (optional)  Wood and  screws your cost would be roughly $ 60.00 to 80.00)

Awesome Guys!!  Thank You!!  I have a friend who is pretty handy with the power tools.  These look easy to understand and considerably cheaper!

Art: still have those bigger aquariums for sale?  Or all they all sold now?

hey art, I don't have a bulldozer but I could locate some termites and we can see how strong it is ;)

A five foot metal stand is $119 at Aquarium Services with an additional 10% discount to OVAS members. Are you really saving money?

Stevie

I just don't like the look of the metal stands!  I know they're cheaper but  they're too stark looking.  I prefer the look of the wood ones!

Maybe better idea to finish metal stand with wood?

artw

I like my wood stand - it was fun putting it together and it looks good if I do say so myself.   but yes david you are correct for quick and dirty metal stands are cheaper than DIY.

and yeah I still have a 96 gallon (56x18x22 high) and a 40 long (36x18x16 high) for sale
