Designing a hood/ballast....?

Hello,

I need a new lighting system so I' ve taken upon myself to build a new ballast and hood for my 36"x12"x18" 33 gallon tank.  I've decided to go with a power compact fluorescent lighting system and now I'm looking for a good hood/ballast plan...  I'd design one myself but I might be "reinventing the wheel".  Any good plans out there?
Just wondering...  :)

Ron

Hi Migs,

Hood designs can vary from very simple to quite complex. Not knowing your skill level or access to machinery, I don't know how complex you want to go. Are you looking for something utilitarian and functional, or a more sophisticated design for a show tank in a formal setting? I operate a furniture design studio with a fully equipped woodworking shop, so what works well for me may not be convenient for others.

If you are getting your PC fluorescents from AH Supply (which I can heartily recommend!), I believe they will provide you with plans for a nice hood free for the asking.

Good luck with your project,

Ron

Hi Ron!  Thanks for responding,
I saw the ballast design on the A.H.supply site.  I intend on getting one of those ballast kits(very nice) but their box design looks a little too simple for my needs...  I'm looking to build a hood "mantle" with a ballast incorporated into it.  The hood should match the old piece of wood furniture the aquarium sits upon in style and stain colour(that won't be easy, dark walnut? ).

I have the beginnings of a shop.  Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to buy the major woodworking tools(router, table saw, mitre saw) yet but I have access to them when needed.

I'm willing to take my time designing and building this; I want it to look perfect.  I do have basic knowledge building furniture and a complex project doesn't frighten me; I look forward to the learning experience!  Do you know of any plans available that I could use as a reference?
