How do you tell the sex of a pleco?

I believe it's a sailfin...large dorsal fin, black with white spots/patterns. It looks bulkier than a common pleco, and the markings are a bit different than a white dotty...so I'm going with sailfin. (sorry it wasn't marked when I bought him 4 years ago )

If I am not mistaken, this pleco will grow to at least 12" long and they won't show any sexual differences until then or close to 12". See my avatar, that was my sailfin at 5" long.
