Suggestions for a better OVAS forum - grouping similar posts

I'm wondering if we can group all of the most popular forum topics together? e.g. all postings related to lighting, substrate, startup, plant keeping, etc.

Many topics come again in cycles (not that it is a bad thing) but for users ( amateurs and pros alike) it would be nice to go to one area and read through topics related to lighting for example.

Just a suggestion.

Here is a site that is grouped as you descibe.

www.plantedtank.net

It is a very large group of members.

well we discussed this a while back, about creating separate forums for each subject matter.   We still do not have the traffic to warrent this,  I check the board every day or 2, and there is still only 1 or maybe a page and a half of new posts.

TBarb

No, I don't mean new forums but that we take the most popular postings, say those about 'lighting', and group them together, remove similar and place them in an area called 'lighting' sort of what thekrib does.

ya there should be different sections like ligthing and stuff aswell as Cichlids, tropical fish, and bottom feeders.

I'd love to see a DIY section for tips and tricks... It'd be an easy way to find topics... though I don't mind the browsing!  :D

What about a search engine similar to the the one on ac where you type in a key word and it provides a listing of the relevant threads?

You mean like this?

d-oh!

I should have known, been cruising this board for some time now!

Troy

It might be time to expand and add another section to the forum  8)

Fish only posts on one forum section  :)

Plants, equipment and anything related to aquariums in another forum section.

Classified (same)

Lounge (same)

There is a very fast turn over of question
I think it might be time to grow the forum a little.

Some people might like to see questions stay active on the main page for a little longer period.

TBarb

I second Troy's posting. I think we can start growing the board into different sections

I personally think we should get rid of phpBB2 and use a better bulletin board such as vbulletin.

This board seems to have alot of issues with browser compatability. I am registered on several other phpBB forums, but this one is always causing me grief.

Mind you this post should probably be in "The lounge" as it doesn't pertain to the nature of the other posts.

The only issue I consistantly see with the Ovas site is pages loading as "just text"...as opposed to being properly rendered.  I have to hit F5 constantly to get things looking right.

I see this in IE and Firefox, on many machines.

I think this is a server issue (rather than a phpBB issue) as is also happens with the other parts of the website  It can get very annoying.

Shouganai

The most annoying thing I find with that issue is when I initially load the forum index page and I get the source instead. Then, when I reload the page, it marks all the topics as read.

artw

also Vbulletin is not free.
We'll discuss it at the next Executive meeting

I have a license I am not using, and you guys are more than welcome to use it. Just my way of saying thanks for all the help I have received over the long run.

I have a similar problem. As soon as I read one post, all the others are marked as read.
