Sitting watching Canada AM I heard a splat sound I knew a fish had jumped out. Looked behind the stand there was my prized Solar Fairy Wrasse lieing on the dusty & dirty carpet behind the stand & tank. My 11 yr. was still home he was able to reach down and get him out.

I held him in my hand in the tank to make sure he was cleaned off. Then left him go but he sank. I gently picked him back up and moved him in the flow back and forth a little. He is still on the bottom under the edge of a rock. Some fast breathing with clamped fins. I feel he will likely not make it. :( Be so surprised if he did.

The gap on the back of the tank is so small never thought he or any fish could get out of there. Now trimming up some egg crate to seal any gaps period.

What crappy deal to start the day for him and me. I looked for long while to get one and now looks like I will loss the poor little guy. :( x 1,000,000

lets hope he makes it. i have heard of the same things happening and the fish survived.... cross you fingers

oh Dan, That SUCKS! It has happened to Steve quite a few times...It is very sad!

Hope he makes it - keep us posted!

bitterman

It sucks,  but wrasses seam to like to jump .... the velvet wrasse in our tank jumped also :( My son was sooo sad.

Remember wrasses will excrete a sack to protect them when really stressed, so unless a hermit, shrimp or snail is eating it, it might still just be recovering.

I went and had a nap after staring at the motionless little guy. :( I just got up and looked under the rock's edge where he'd been lieing - he was gone. I figured he'd wiggled away from a hermit or my Emerald Crab. I moved back to stand and there we was swimming as if nothing had ever happened.

This made my day!!! It took me some time to find this character and really enjoy watching him. I've since covered the small gaps with egg crate never happen again. Never thought any fish could/would get out of those gaps? Wow! I Know better now. I am feeding some frozen cyclops one of his favorate meals to see if he is going to eat OK.

I figure if he makes it through the day and he is eating he will be fine. It was such good timing I was sitting here and heard the little noise. It was all less than 10 min. to recover him. Also lucky my son a hell of lot smaller then me but very tall was still here. He was able to squeeze around the corner and lift him out from behind and off the carpet ever so gently.

Still crossing my fingers!  :-\

A month ago I lost my bluespot jaw fish one of the favorite character fish in my reef tank, I'd just thought this fish would settle underneath of my brain coral bcoz it's been a week now so I decided not to leave any cover of my tank, that day arrived home the first thing comes up in my mind is the bluespot. You would never believe what would I found on my floor a dryout bluespot and here's my words f@uck the whole night thinking about what made this fish to jump out my tank and no clue what's so ever.  :'(

I've only ever had one fish jump from my tank and lo and behold...it was a fairy wrasse :-\

I was walking down the street and a man was hammering on a roof top and he called me a Paranoid Little Weirdo. . . in morse code.

Glad to hear he ight be okay afterall Dan, I do love that kind of wrasse!

If you find eggcrate too large, I recommend cross-stitch webbing.  It's plastic and comes in clear, black, etc, has tiny little holes and is quite flexible.  I use it on the back of my canopy where eggcrate would not have worked.
Tanks: salty nano cube, working on a fresh 125

Good idea with the cross stitch webbing RoxyDog. I have some but it is green. It is less conspicuous. I was thinking of painint the egg crate black. I think when I have the larger tank setup I'll go the webbing route - thanks... :)

Good to hear he is doing better - how did he fair last night?

Roxy - is that the same as like window screen?! Ive seen Pat and Trina's display tank and they have a screen (same as on windows) and they velvro'd it and it is super easy to cover all open areas that way and even easier to access if need be. I was wondering if this is the same thing or something different. I really would like to do that to Steve's tank because his white eggcrate is ug-gah-ly (No offence Steve xox)

Sorry for the thread jack Dan :)

Sorry for the thread jack Dan :)

I never think it is thread jacking if it is about fish/fun... :) conversations go back and forth.

I was thinking Roxy meant that stuff from Michaels. It's plastic and has small squares there are different sized holes too I think? I like the velcro idea just not sure how that would work. I wouldn't want to use a matarial that would get knocked off.

HChicka you can paint the egg crate with spary can of enamal for plastic. Cheap cans are less than $5/$6. I am painting it on my upgraded setup black.

hey Dan, glad "lucky" made it

you should try what I did with my tank, I built a canopy (shell) nothing fancy and it looks neat too. I used 1/4 inch plywood 3 coats of paint and shiny beautiful.

Let me know I can send you pics and if you need a hand I can help you build it.

RoxyDog

The cross stitch stuff is thicker plastic than window screen, and yes you get it at Michael's or Walmart in the craft section.

Do they have it with bigger holes?

No idea, but I'm guessing no.  The tiny holes are nice b/c nothing is going to get through them, unlike eggcrate.

The egg crate affects the light a lot less I am guessing. That is why I was interested in larger hole designs. Guess an exploration trip is required. The wife will enjoy that she will go - she hasn't gone to a LFS with me in ages. But hey that is an advantage... LOL ;)

The less she knows about the $$ involved in this hobby, the better, LOL

I am like that - Sev tries to tell me that coral was only $3 dollars.... :D expensive hobby but worth every freakin dime!!!
