Today I bought some hermits from the classifieds.
When I brought them home I dumped them in my tank and watched for a couple minutes.
Right away I saw a big green striped leg(don't know the actual name) jump out of his shell.
He was in a pile of blue legs and they were all picking at his tender butt.
So, I rushed him out of harms way, and grabbed him a handful of shells that I thought would make a good fit.
After a few minutes of prodding shells at him he eventually settled in.

Also.

I noticed another one of the crabs I had bought was in a Turbin snail shell 2x too big for his little frame.
The hermit was laying on his side and was unable to touch the ground.
I noticed there was a shell that would better suite him about 3" away...the problem:he couldn't move.
So, I prodded the shell in claws reach.
In a matter of seconds he bailed out of his old shell and hopped in his new house.

Cool eh?
True story :)
