Never noticed it here in Brockville.

Minor rock slide.

This is the 4th quake in my lifetime and by far the longest/strongest.

I was walking down the street and a man was hammering on a roof top and he called me a Paranoid Little Weirdo. . . in morse code.

I sure watched in horror as the waves formed in some of the larger tanks. I have 52 tanks and the worst were the 7ft' tanks where the waves started. I didn't have any damage yet, but I got to wonder if any structural damage to the seams occured.
I definately am going to inspect all the PVC and ABS seams and sump drains, as they aren't flexible and they obviously have been twisted.

Cbellehumeur

Still at work i hope it's okay  :-\

Brent Shaver

I know what you mean by waves, I just happened to pop in for a minute when it happened, I looked at my 110 just as wave came over the one end, was sure the tank was going to go with it.  I figure I lost about 3-5 gallons of water on the floor.

I too hope the structure made it through ok, has some rock move around but all fish are ok, the 50 was ok as I dont have rock work.

Biggest and hardest I have ever experienced in my life, I should have been getting out as I am on ground floor but was more worried about the fish.. :)

FishBuddy

This is the worst earthquake I've personally experienced!  It was outright scary if you have not experience a big one like this.  Now, I know what it feels like to live in California..

We were discussing an issue at work with 3 other guys and all of a sudden, things don't look normal.  At the same time, we saw a huge cargo truck that's backing up to our building.  At first, we thought the darn truck hit the building and caused the building to sway.  After about 10 secs, we knew something was wrong.

What an experience!

Got home quick to check on the tanks.  2 of the HOBs stopped working as we lost power for a bit.  No spillage on the floor is a good sign.  Although, like Markw said, wonder what the earthquake does to the seal of the tanks (especially older tanks).  I have to check it out thoroughly over the next little while just to be sure...

Is everyone and their fish/tanks ok?

I was at work,  but my wife said the water was looking pretty crazy.   no damage or spills.

Fish and tanks are all fine. Is it a sign of fish geekdom that that's the first thing I checked (I was home at the time)?

Brent Shaver

Matt you will be happy to know your old building shook so bad wall units came crashing down.

Miss the place yet? lol

kerisb

Sure felt it here in Kemptville.    My tanks are ok and seeing as I don't fill them right to the top (too many fish that like to splash at feeding time lol) no water spilled out!      Sure was quite the shaking going on though!!

redbelly

I was outside when the quake hit. The power went off too so I couldnt go back in to check on the tanks but you can guarentee I was sweating buckets, worrying about the 4'x10' tank here!
And the 4'x7' tank thats 5' in the air and just a couple weeks old... yeah needles to say I was worried!

We didnt even have a single sump overflow though.

Fishnut

That was the first earthquake that I have ever experienced.  At first I thought that some jerk was driving a giant truck down the road in front of our house...sometimes OC Transpo buses send a great deal of vibration...but when it went on for more than a few seconds minus the quiet, loud, quiet of the bus passing and when my radio station cut out, I knew it was a quake.  I ran to grab Fishnut Jr. from his crib...who had just fallen asleep...and ran outside.  I had a brief thought of my fish tanks but I was so worried about what the heck I was supposed to do to stay safe in an earth quake that I didn't think about the fish other than hoping the tanks didn't crack.  I guess the fish geekdom didn't survive the maternal instinct :).  Nothing splashed, cracked or sprung a leak, so I guess we're ok.  We didn't loose power either!!!

Personally, I'm way more freaked out by the fact that I felt so unprepared for that type of an emergency!  For starters, where are you supposed to run in an earth quake?  Outside seemed logical because nothing could fall on us but that's not the case in an area with lots of high risers.  Second, those few seconds it took me to figure out it was an earth quake were seconds wasted in getting Fishnut Jr. and myself out of the house.

White Lightning

I was just about to sit down to eat some ribs for lunch and started to feel the tremors. My wife looked at me and said WTF???? She then proceeded to say hurry let's get in the basement. I looked at her sideways and said thats for tornados. After teh shaking stopped We ate our lunch. All tanks were fine!

fischkopp

Was quite a freaky experience. Doesn't need to get any stronger for my liking. I wasn't home when it struck, but nothing seems to be out of place. I am kind of worried about what Mark mentioned: that there could have been quite some stress on the seems, especially on larger tanks.

I think I got a bit lucky too. I live on the 15th floor; my 6ft 180gal isn't completely filled with water at the moment. But from the residue on the glass I can tell that the waves inside the tank reached an amplitude of 3 inches!!!  :o That is close to swapping over when the tank would be running normally! Really hope that's it with earthquakes for now ...

I was at work, and once I knew my family was ok I worried the tanks might have spilled, but I got lucky. :D

I've never been so glad to have slacked off and missed a water change, so that my tanks weren't as full as they usually are.

Check it out, you can fill out a form to tell NRCan what you felt in the earthquake:

You know, for science ;)

My marine tank is filled just under the edge of the trim not a drop spilled. The plumbing is fine far as I could tell. My African tank is also always filled high it was fine. The rock work in both stayed in place all was good. I was more worried about the hydro going off. In areas of Mechanicsville it went out I live in Centretown. I was not home so this was a concern. The traffic was brutal all government buildings or most let everyone go at once - total grid lock.  :o

I live on the 15th floor. There is nothing like feeling a big building swaying back and forth. I'm thinking, man if this gets any stronger my building is going to topple over and there isn't a thing I can do but stand in the middle of my living room chills going up and down my spine. My cats went crazy trying to find a room that wasn't moving. The building swayed for a least another 5 to 10 minutes before it became still again.
Very exciting experience when nobody and no fish got hurt.

hahaha ... thats the funniest thing i've heard today ... well am glad everyone is fine specially the tanks cause if any of these monsters blew ... it'll be a really bad memory ... as said earler ppl with bigger tanks should reenforce their stands .... I believe my 110 gallong wont stand another hit like that .... so goodluck everyone.
