Hi everyone

new project to start

Anyone have any plans for a closed loop system. It must be over the rim and work on a 220 gal tank. I am tired of cleaning powerheads and replacing them. I have 6 korilla 4 power heads and would like to be using maybe 2.
Need powerful cheap pump ?
pipe size ?
how many outlets can put in ? would like  6
do not have a lot of room for pump, Maybe a mag12.
do i use a 1 1/4 intake and the run 1 inch pipe to the top of the tank and the reduce to 3/4 to keep pressure.

Any help .

A mag 12 is too small. Figure that it is 1200 GPH and that each of your K4 pumps are 1200 GPH.

You will want something larger like a dart (3600 GPH) or better yet a Hammer head (6400 GPH).

You will need 2 x 1.5" drains in the tank and then your returns can run over the top of you want.

Yes you can run the inputs to the pump over the top of the tank but its not advisible as when any pump has to run a flooded suction the closed loop pump will be louder...

I run a closed loop on my 144g with a gold series Dart + I run several vortech pumps.

I have a 220g. If I did a closed loop, I would use a super dart gold(4200gph). I use one of these on my frag tank. Small, quiet, 5yr warranty, lower hydro use and less issues with seal leaks. Avoid the flooded suction if possible. I tried this on a skimmer feed, way noisy and the pump ran hotter than normal.
I used 4 K4's on the 220, now, because I haven't shut it down to drill it, I use 4 MP40W running  at 75%. Seems to lots of flow for SPS.

If you have urchins in your tank, keep and eye on the K4's wires. I have seen the wires get chewed through to cause a direct short.

Oh, avoid any MAG pump for closed loop. Stick with an external pump, MAG pumps create TONS of heat and are quite noisy when used externally. I used a MAG 12 internally to feed the same skimmer mentioned above. It created enough heat to force cooling on a 400g system. After using external pumps, I avoid MAG pumps like the plaque.
