I am looking for some 55 gallon food grade barrels to mix salt in and holr RO water.  Problem is the only ones I can find had chemical cleaners in them.  Is it likely that some chemical leached into the plastic, thus making it impossible to clean?

What does everyone else use to store large amounts of water in?

I use the Rubbermaid garbage cans with the lids.
Never any problems with them and lots of people use them.-$14 each on sale.

go to Cohens and they have many 55G barrels that are food grade.  I used them for a pond filter setup.

If I bought an olive barrel from cohens, would cleaning it with soap and water then rinsing it with viniger be enough or would there be residue left over?

I used them from Cohens and they were very clean already. I rinsed them out with water. I didn't see any residue at all in them.  Mine had cola in them.

Preston Hardware also sells the barrels - $20-ish each.

how clean are the ones from preston?

Rybren

I haven't bought one from Preston, but they told me that they are unused and generally sold for winemaking.
