redone tank

Hubby and I redid our 150g reef after seeing Trina and Patrick's bonsai-style tank.  We consider ours more of a "pagoda" than bonsai-style because we used some large, flat live rock pieces to create bridges between the rock pillars. We're really pleased with the results.

I am curious about the pillars of rocks - how did you do this? I assume the pillars are piled up using smaller piece of rocks. Did you glue them together?

Yes very nice for sure. I've never seen it in person but they forgot to mention this is an 8 yr. old marine setup. That is awesome very successful setup many never make it the first yr. Most be one of the older tanks around town I bet? Great tribute to your efforts and it shows.

Thanks very much, Dan. You'll have to come by to see the tank one of these days. Although we've had the tank up for 8 years, a lot of the pieces like the big red echino (center/bottom), the big blue chalice (fluted bowl-shaped piece on left-side "bridge) and the XXL clams are new additions to the tank, just in the last month or so. I tend to get hubby to re-aquascape it every couple of years or so and we always seem to be adding something new. But I think it's going to stay like this for a good long while. We're both really pleased with the way it turned out. 

Laker, some of the pieces are glued together but most of it just kind of "locked" into place by putting certain rocks together and turning them around. The tank itself is 48"W x 30"H x 24" D. and it's is in a 6'W x 7'H cabinet that has a door on the front, above the tank. (you can see it here: http://ovas.ca/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1466) Because of that, we can't drop anything into place so it has to be done pretty much a piece at a time. That said, I wouldn't want to put a large sea urchin in there or anything else that might plow through the rock and knock it over.

I saw the tank in person a year or so ago and I was really impressed. I don't see the zoa rock you bought from me??? Did it perish or did you just decide to change things up?

Actually, we broke the zoa rock into several pieces due to the change in tank decor. Plus green star polyps had grown onto the rock and the only way to fix it was to break away the parts they were on. They stung the zoas. But most zoas were saved and they are placed in the lower third of the tank. You should just be able to see the green ones on the bottom of the right-side pillar, to the left of the cabbage leather. The rest aren't really visible in this shot. Thanks for the compliments on the tank, by the way.

Thanks Az. Glad you like it. I know, it's sad, me naming all the fish, including "Little Gaspare" named after my hubby because he eats a lot.
